It's Turandot but the lighting was terrible

Turandot with staging by Zeffirelli gets 5 stars out of the box.
From there, we take off big points for the dim lighting. We don't know if this was the Met's problem or Fathom ( I think that's who created the encore tape) or the projector at AMC24 in Hamilton NJ where we saw it, but it was so dull and dim, selling it as "HD" was almost a lie. Everything was crisp, for sure, but most of the time you couldn't see it.
Gelb has done a good job in helping to incorporate acting, casting, staging as equals to voice and orchestration. But, it is still very hard for me to believe that Maria Guleghina's beauty would cause Calef to risk almost certain death.
On the other hand, Guleghina's voice is spectacular and her acting held up well to the close-ups. Giordani, on the other hand, was stiff barely emoted. And, while he nailed the "vincero", he was seriously flat on some other important high points.
The staging and costuming were superb, and I very much enjoyed the casting of the dancers, the headsman, and the other major characters, Poplavskaya in particular although the cinematographer included far too many shots of her from below, which emphasized her mammoth jaw.
Final note: throughout almost the entire show at the AMC 24, one was very aware of a very loud thundering from the show in the adjacent theater.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Gallactic advance in movie effects

For technology, this is a 10 out of 10. MUST SEE IN 3D! I'm going to go back to see it in IMAX. Amazingly realistic and intricate world created for this movie. I hear they might publish the encyclopedia used by the filmers.
The story, unfortunately, was a bit trite.
And, the gratuitous jibes (comments on pre-emptive strikes) and false myths (american indians were indeed in touch with nature, but they also were savages - especially towards other tribes) really detracted - ?why do this; it was such a wonderful movie otherwise?
Yes, I recommend this movie.
