I went with friends to see Coraline & we loved it. The 3D effects were great fun & made the movie very immersive. The story, based on the book by Neil Gaiman, was unusual & definitely non-formulaic. Watching to see how all the diverse elements came together kept the movie from ever being boring at all. The dark elements of the story combined with the innocence of childhood created the perfect balance of creepy & captivating. Some people think this movie is too scary for children & I half-agree. Well-adjusted children 8 & up will love this movie. There were some parents in the theater when we saw the movie who had unwisely brought their younger children to see it. These kids were clearly frightened, but they should not have been there.
There were no major conflicts with previous or future story lines and the characters were well-rounded. I thoughtt that Skywalker was a bit more mature and likable in this installment than could be easily believed, considering his demeanor in the next installment already out. Obiwan was also portrayed as a little bit older than the story timeline might suggest him to be at this point , as well. I am a tremendous fan of animation of all types and in this aspect the film did not disappoint. The characters and backgrounds were beautifully rendered and moved in a believable manner. Overall , very much fun.
