3-D, motion-capture, computer graphics all blended phenomenally. There were many stretches where you really forgot that the critters you were seeing on-screen were not real. Watching the actors fly around on imaginary beasts was far more realistic than the quidditch sequences in Harry Potter movies, for example. It was worth seeing despite the simple-minded black-white plot that seemed to do its utmost to convince viewers that they were watching a battle between evil money-grubbing Republicans who never saw a tree they didn't want to kill and the compassionate, caring progressives dedicated to saving the planet.
