In my theater the seats were completely filled, including the one next to me with a reveller dressed in a bat costume. Those 12:00 midnight shows can be strange. In spite of a few plot elements that don't really mature, this movie falls into the "must see a second time" category. We are all a product of our childhoods to a certain extent, and Bruce Wayne and the Joker had glaringly large childhood traumas which helped form their characters. I was intrigued by the complexity that Ledger brought to his Joker, his malevolent spirit and his passion for chaos. Even so, I go for the supporting roles as much as the leads. Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman help bolster the ensemble and the technology is almost a character itself. The audience contributed just the right gasp here and "Wow" there, confirming my own emotional responses. There were definately times, though, when I felt I was crossing over to the dark side ... meaning that I had glimpses of empathy for they wrong type of character. I think that the script does this intentionally, giving some ambiguity to the whole 'good versus evil' theme.
