I hate to say "best movie I've seen all year" since it is still only January 2009, but this movie was fabulous. Eastwood played an honest and moving character. The actor who played the Hmong supporting actor (Thao) was hot as well. Great job!
The action sequences were, of course, great. The emotiional baggage from Bond's romantic interest in Casino Royale had to be cleared away. Okay, I am okay with all of that. How about a bit more plot and character development (ala "The Villiain")? You can't just rest on your James Bond pedigree to carry the movie. Also, moving the James Bond character back to the more laid-back bachelor / womanizer role is refreshing. More true to the original. I hate how every Hollywood action movie nowadays must have some sort of female love interest. It takes valuable time away from the action and other activities in the movie!
This movie started as a typical Hollywood action movie, but it started to change about 1/3 through. It reminded me more of one of the Asian (Chinese or Korean) action movies where more character depth--mostly around the main character ,not to him--was emphasized. The view of Thailand was a bit one-sided--until the love interest was introduced. Once the main character began to see the humanity in others close to him, his picture of reality changed. He started to see that what he did impacted others--usually in a negative way. I believe that is what truly changed the main character and may have brought about his undoing in the end.
