2009 brought us two Sci-Fi movies that had very important social commentary. The first was "District 9" and "Avatar" is the second. Where the former showed how humans would treat an alien race should they land on our planet by putting them in concentration camps, the latter shows how humans can justify pre-emptive war on a civilization for mining purposes all to benefit a corporation. These are important movies, and "Avatar" is gorgeous, and honestly it doesn't feel like it's almost 3 hours long. Finally, I think Michelle Rodriguez has finally mastered the butch Latina grunt role. I seriously hope someone casts her against type one of these days... I have no idea whether she's capable of anything else.
I've watched every episode of every series, every movie, and the animated series. So I'm a fan. This movie changes some things, it creates a new reality for new stories to be told, welcome to the Star-Trek Multiverse! This does not undo anything previously known in the Star-Trek Universe, it only paves the way to expand on the characters we already love from original Trek. The casting is perfect (except for Winona Ryder, thankfully it's brief), the special effects are amazing, the action doesn't let up, and I'm going to see this over and over again. Star-Trek is movie making at its funnest, is loyal enough to the original Trek, and JJ Abrams is to be commended for a job really well done.
The movie followed the flow of the book. When people say it went all over the place, it did, but so did the book. I think when people complain about the nudity, they're probably feeling intimidated and inadequate down there. I agree it's a little bit time-consuming, and they messed with the ending a bit, but overall I was extremely satisfied with The Watchmen! I will watch the Watchmen more than once. The sound and the sights were spectacular. The acting was superb and the action was brutal. It was rated R for a reason, and it used that rating to its advantage. Go see it, if you're not a prude.
This could have very easily been a 2-part X-Files episode, that should have been aired for free. Rent it by all means. It was great to see Scully and Mulder together again, but nothing really happened in this movie. It's an X-File about organ harvesting. No aliens, no answers to anything, no big secret revealed, nothing. It was only occasionally scary, there was some tension and a few good scenes, but honestly, save your money. The truth isn't out there, and the tagline "I want to believe" is incomplete. "I want to believe I didn't just shell out $10.50 to see what was basically a long 6th season episode" Self gratification for Chris Carter, and nobody else.
