Eastwood at his best.

He may be close to 80, but Clint Eastwood is as tough as he ever was. Eastwood plays a Korean War veteran whom the world has long since passed by. His asian neighbors are harrassed by gangbangers, and Eastwood intercedes, becoming a reluctant hero to the community. Little by little, Eastwood starts to care about the his neighbors, and helps the young boy of the family to become a responsible adult. The gang continues to terrorize the neighborhood though, until Eastwood is forced to take drastic measures to stop them. The ending is too good to spoil, but any fan of Clint Eastwood should love this film.

For those who like comic books.

Having seen Sin City, I was aware of what I was getting into when I saw The Spirit. Frank Miller's overall approach to filmmaking is to make a movie look more like a comic book, rather than vise versa. The Spirit had a very slick blend of old detective and film noir elements, but once in a while the story seemed a little disjointed. I forgive Miller for that, because I am familiar with his books, but people who don't know Miller's work may not like this film.

Meh.

Although this film is significantly jazzed up for modern audiences, it is really nothing more than another remake that fails to keep the essence of the classic that inspired it. Jennifer Connelly's character is saddled with the thankless job of convincing a superior alien being that humans are worthy of existence, and I don't think she does a very good job. Only when she brings the alien to see John Cleese does any viable argument come up the humans are worth believing in. Also, the ending really falls flat because so much is left out. The ending was what made the original so powerful, and this one was just a void in comparison. I think renting the original film would be more worthwhile.

This was a fun Bond movie. Daniel Craig is the best 007 since Sean Connery himself. The action sequences are intense, and I didn't want to blink during any of them. Solace comes up short on nifty gadgets, but there are enough beautiful women and nafarious villans to make up for that. I think it would be a good idea to watch casino Royal before seeing Quantum of Solace, As Solace picks up where Casino Royal leaves off...literally.

Different Perspective

This movie was a lot more sympathetic to President Bush than I thought it would be. Oliver Stone does not excuse or sugar-coat any of the actions of the 43rd President. Instead, he offers a perspective on the story of his life that presents a different possible motivation behind many of his actions. We see how Bush Jr.'s relationship with his father may have played a role in his decision to go into Iraq. We also see how devistating it can be when no one, and I mean no one, communicates effectively with one others in government matters. W. tells a cautionary story about leadership and judgement without turning into propaganda for any political party, and I think it is a pretty decent film for anyone.

Just an OK western

With so many great actors, I was sure that Appaloosa would be great. Alas, it was just OK; a standard western similar to any classic that one could rent for less that one would have to pay to get into the theater. The film feels too long, and I wished Viggo Mortensen had more opportunities to use his 8-guage rifle. Oh well.

Funny and Loud!

This movie is a lot more fun than I thought it would be. The story kept me interested, and the way the movie swings from comedy to action and back to comedy seemed pretty natural. Robert Downey Jr. was my personal favorite, but Jack Black was really funny too. I was also surprised at how genuinly funny Tom Cruise is...I usually find him annoying. The action is fun but it does get violent, so this may not be for the faint of heart. Overall though, this is a good movie.

This Mummy movie does not stand up to the Mummy movies that came before it. The story is disjointed and flimsey, and the characters seemed like flakes the harder they tried to force the plot to work. Also, the absence of Rachel Weiss crippled this movie overall. Poor Maria Bello just can't fill in for her because Weiss had defined that character so clearly, no one could have replaced her. The only part that I really got into was when the yetis showed up. Not only did they save the day, but they upstaged the human actors. I was dissappointed that they didn't have a larger role in the movie. I do not recommend taking the time to see this movie in a theater, go see The Dark Knight again, and wait for the DVD of this one.

I wasn't expecting a lot from Swing Vote, which is good because it didn't offer a lot in terms of comedy. However, I give Swing Vote credit for having a sincere message about the risks of voter apathy, and the important principle of being part of the political process. It isn't really about who voted for whom, what really matters is that people care enough to vote at all.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

The Dark Knight is not a film to be missed. It has a switftly moving plot, a long list of very capable actors bringing every character to life in a believable manner, and more than enough action to satisfy any moviegoer. Heath Ledger's Joker is both chilling and funny at the same time (which is what the original concept of the Joker was intended to be in the 1930s). Christian Bale delivers a excellent performance as Batman again. Bale clearly understands and respects the character that he plays because I was just as surprised by the twists in this movie as I was when I first read some Batman comics. It must be made clear that this is not a movie for small children; this is nothing like the cartoons, or the old TV show, or any of the Batman films that came before it. As the title implies, the Dark Knight is DARK, and also violent and gritty, with an intensity that one rarely experiences at the movies these days. I left the theater feeling numb, it is that intense. The Dark Knight stands as more that a sequel, and more than just a superhero movie. Not only is it Heath Ledger's swan song on the big screen, but it also shows how powerful any film can be when you have the right people making it.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
