Danny Boyle does it again with a stirring and inspirational story of "daredevil" and highly resourceful outdoorsman Aron Ralston. The direction, acting, cinematography, editing and music was all top-flight. Without question, James Franco should be nominated for an Academy Award, as he pulls off a very difficult assignment, especially in light of the fact that he is on screen nearly every minute of the running time.
The proof is in the pudding, as the saying goes! I took my grandchildren to see this and they loved it!!! In fact, they immediately wanted to see it again. Although this film had a good message about "the importance of family", it was purely made for children (of all ages) to be entertained.
I haven't seen a purely entertaining children's film (which I enjoyed immensely) like this in some time.
Johnny Depp, Marion Cotillard, Billy Crudup and Christian Bale all do a marvelous job in making this film work. However, Michael Mann's visual experimentation with high definition video cameras is absolutely stunning! Three scenes stand out: (1) Dillinger's breakout from a jail in Ohio, taking a police car with his gang and a hostage, waiting at a traffic light; (2) Purvis and his crew sneaking up on a location in Wisconsin where Dillinger is holed up; (3) Where Dillinger tempts fate by sneaking into the office where the "Dillinger Squad" is working. This is a dazzling film. Go see it!
I found it to be visually astounding and an extremely well-made and crafted film. The overall music and song choices were excellent, especially in the opening credit sequence and first scene. The hyper-violence that occurs throughout the film is cartoonish and well-choreographed. In the end, this film is allegorical. If one knows their history, as well as the present, the author is clearly poking us in the sides and asking us to look deeper into the recent past sowe can avoid the ultimate potential of nuclear annihilation ("even if its only the East coast"). If you can see this in IMAX, I highly recommend it!!!
Woody has hit his mark this time, with terrific writing, editing, cinematography, directing, and the talents of a wonderful ensemble cast. The focus of the film is a timeless one: questioning what, where, when, why, and how we find and experience "love", and the changes it brings to our lives. Of course, there is more to the film, but the essence is as I have spelled out. In the end, if you are a Woody Allen fan, definitely go see it. Even if you know nothing about Woody Allen, but have a soft spot in your heart and are intellectually curious, as well as having a more high-minded sense of humor, I believe you will appreciate this masterful film by one of the world's best directors.
This is a beautifully crafted epic story of Genghis Khan. Everything about the film (i.e. directing, writing, cinematography, editing, sound design and acting) are first rate. DO NOT LET SUBTITLES, OR SOME GORY FIGHT SCENES PUT YOU OFF! The historical elements and mythology provide some unique insights into the life and times of such an extraordinary historical figure. If you like well-made films that have something to say, while being entertained at the same time, this is one of those films to see.
