I watched the anime back when it first came out a few years ago. It was ridiculous, but funny at the same time with the gore of heads flying off and just horribly done sex scenes. I was expecting the same kind of horrible humor in this movie. Instead what I got was no sex scenes (thank goodness) and lots of silly exploding blood gore that was filmed dark to even make it seem less crazy. The fight scenes were still hilarious and the action was done very well. I was expecting a good BAD movie, but what I got was just a good overall movie. The 2nd one looks very promising and I like all of the changes that have been made from the manga/anime (which I'm not a huge fan of, by the way). Good job to the team working/that worked on this film, you did it right! NOW let's get the second one subbed instead of dubbed and we'll be good.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I went into this movie expecting a lot, as the previews ALL made me laugh and I was actually not disappointed! The entire movie was as great as the previews made it out to be, not a boring part in the entire movie! I saw this with my husband in 3D, but will probably go again with a group of friends. I would say it was some of the best entertainment for all ages that I have seen in recent days, do yourself a favor and go see it.
The movie was one of the best I have ever seen in the Imax and probably the best in Imax 3D (and I've seen all of the blockbusters such as Avatar and Alice in Wonderland). The story was well put together, one of the best book adaptions in recent history. Excellent and enjoyable for both kids and adults, not sappy like a lot of children's movies nowadays! Yet, not to violent and adult orientated either, great mix for everyone to enjoy.
Saw this movie in a scaled down AMC Imax in 3D and it was absolutely stunning. The visuals are beyond any movie to date. The story had some issues where it seems the director ran out of time and starting cutting the movie, but overall still flowed well. I can see this coming out on DVD as a 6 hour edition, though the 2 hours 40 minutes in a theater with 3D glasses on was plenty enough for me. Still hands down one of the best movies of the year. Do youself a favor and go see it in 3D (Imax if you can).
I haven't really truly watched anything Star Trek before, so I was really surprised at how enjoyable this movie was!
I don't have anything bad to say about the movie; but the "Imax" theater we saw it in (Woodbridge, VA - AMC 18) didn't feel like a "real" Imax theater. it simply did not have the watts or experience I've come to expect from Udvar Hazy or the Smithsonian Imax theaters.
Go see this movie if you haven't already though! Trek fan or not, you will enjoy it.
