I'm not a big Les Mis fan, so don't take me too seriously. I thought it was OK, although it oversimplified the novel (as it had to do). I though Hugh Jackman was good. Anne Hathaway's role is actually a fairly brief one, but she made it memorable. I didn't think the singing worked, but I at least got the impression that some of the actors would have had good voices if the songs had been done the standard way. Oh, and I thought the songs were totally unmemorable, except for "Look Down," which is reprised at least twice so you can't help remembering it.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

I go to opera for the singers, and the three principals were just magnificent. That soprano role sounds very hard to sing -- and there is so much singing for the soprano! I thought Ms. Dessay was also excellent as an actress; she combined well Viloletta's beauty and vulnerability.
I have to admit that I did not care for the miminalist staging, and never did figure out why we had a huge clock on stage.

This was a success in every way possible. Every singer was strong, and I loved the baroque music.

I enjoyed the accompanying music -- I like baroque music. The singers were spectacular. II was particularly impressed by Stephanie Blythe, although Renee Fleming was great, as usual. This was my first experience of countertenors, and I found them a little hard to get used to. It just seemed slightly weird to have this big strong romantic character that singing in such a high pitch. It seemed particularly odd in the duet or two with Ms. Fleming. Still, even I could tell that the two countertenors, particularly Scholl, are spectacular at what they do. Like other reviewers, I liked the way the scenery was done. As for the Da Capo form with the constant repetitions, I wasn't turned off at all. At least the action continued throughout all the repetitions; it wasn't "park and bark" at all. I also liked the Deborah Voight interviews and the looks backstage. (Ms. Fleming is excellent at conducting interviews, too)Note that the run-time was closer to four hours, fifteen or twenty minutes.
