Robert Downey Jr. is note perfect in this clever flight of fancy from talented actor/director Jon Favreau. The film pays close homage to the visual intensity of its comic-book origins, while deftly utilizing the latest in nifty film special-effects. It also capably manages the tricky task of being both mechanically plausible and humanistically engaging. The dialogue is crisp and hilarious, and the cast is flawless, from the repressed characters played by Terrence Howard and Gwyneth Paltrow, to the boistrous characters played by Downey Jr. and Jeff Bridges. While the film would have benefitted from being 10 minutes shorter -as almost every movie would, these days- the editing is sharp, the music strong, and the film, overall, well worth your theater-going effort. Even for a non comic book reader like I am, this film sets a new standard for its genre and is an instant classic.
