Some good insights here and there, but not enough consistency or focus. These thinkers pretty much rambled on about whatever they wanted to talk about. Given the time constraints, they sometimes started out talking about some interesting themes and then left a lot of loose ends. Peter Singer on consumerism and poverty, Judith Butler on disability, Zizek on ecology, Cornel West on... well, I'm not sure what, and a few others -- would have been interesting to see them all really address the same questions from their own differing perspectives and really complete a few thoughts.
Big disappointment. Coraline is a tiresome, whiny, flat-voiced little girl, not at all charming or winning. The other characters were also depressing and humorless. Except for a mangy cat, there was hardly a character in the movie with personality and even the cat didn't have much. The script lacked humor, wit, cleverness. The animation was great, but if you spend too much time admiring it, it means that the rest of the movie is lacking. I'm not sure who is supposed to see this movie. It has a dark, evil Tim Burton feel (minus Tim Burton's wit), so it's not good for young children. At the same time, it's not smart enough for adults.
All of the performances were great but they weren't good enough to rescue this film. It suffered from some serious plausibility problems which i can't disclose without spoiling the movie for potential viewers. The pace was uneven and, despite some good local color in Siberia, the violence and chase scenes escalated to a level typically reserved for American action movies. If you are looking for an offbeat, edgy foreign thriller, this is not quite it.
