CG chipmunks were done really well, including animation, lighting, and shading. Hats off to the CG crew.
Story was all too familiar, but our kids thought it was fine.
Jason Lee was conspicuously absent through most of the film, as if he skirted a contract by only appearing in 10 minutes of the film. Thumbs down. Zachary Levi tried to make up for Lee's absence by doing Dave's character plus over-the-top shyness and gross bachelor antics. His character is likable, but cartoony like the Chipmunks. David Cross makes me cringe. His delivery of lines is always very flat and lifeless.
I generally enjoy these films, but continue to find Harry Potter to be a wooden and ineffectual character whose greatest skill seems to be snooping. We continue to be reminded that Harry is "The Chosen One", but his merit seems little to do with his own abilities. Potter is both revered and coddled, not able to resolve his own conflicts. He "dumbly" brave, a non-hero.
The end of this movie has insufficient conflict resolution, lacking ANY coverage as to what happens to the antagonists. The movie builds toward a climax but then everything fizzles out. It is almost as if 15 minutes was lopped of the end. Anyone looking for an action-packed or clever-twist ending will be very disappointed.
Best stereoscopic effect I have seen to date. My young child was trying to reach out and touch the fish. Visually stunning, leaving me wanting more at the end of the 40 minutes.
Jim Carrey is OK, but ultimately distracting and corny. I am not sure why a more qualified, less fortunate voice-over actor cannot get the role.
Music and sound effects were heavy handed and had too much treble. The sound effects often sounded like water splashing at the surface.
No time is spent discussing corals in any detail. All the narration is focused on mobile organisms like fish. They describe the predicament of coral reefs, but do not single out any corals and describe their behaviors.
