Action packed, escapist fare with a good performances all around. If you can suspend disbelief about the attack, it's a thrilling tale of dedication to one's job and the redemption of a hero after having fallen from grace.
Though the critics have given it mixed reviews, the audiences are liking it and for once I think some of the critiques are overly harsh. Gerard Butler has shown he can "kick ass" with the best of them and if you don't try to compare it with the "original" Die Hard (which none of the Die Hard sequels have ever lived up to), you will enjoy it.
Director Antoine Fuqua (with his tongue planted firmly in cheek) has done a good job of giving the audiences an E Ticket ride...so be sure to watch the movie with a big bag of popcorn and enjoy the experience.
If you are a movie buff you will love this love letter to the movies from writer-director Michel Hazanavicius.
I adored every minute of it as it took me out of the present and reminded me why I became a fan of movies in the first place.
The performances by the lead actors made me fall in love with Jean Dujardin's charm and his crooked smile and Berenice Bejo's expressive eyes as they lit up the screen in this silent homage to all the movies we grew up loving.
This is a black and white, silent movie but if you are like me, you will leave the theater with a warm, fuzzy feeling and an appreciation for how much can be said with expressive faces and without speaking a word.
Supporting performances by Uggie the dog, John Goodman as the studio boss and James Cromwel as the faithful driver are wonderful too!
Take your good humor to this movie and prepare to be enchanted.
I loved this movie and the story. It was well acted by the entire cast of seasoned veterans and their younger counterparts, especially Jessica Chastain in the central role of Rachel, the young Mossad agent, later played by Helen Mirren.
While Mirren, Wilkinson, Hinds (and the wonderful Jasper Christensen as the villain) are excellent, the movie really sings when their younger versions are on the screen.
Chastain has already shown promise in her turns in The Help and The Tree of Life and I see big things for this female thespian. She has a lovely, still quality that is very appealing and her acting is very believable in comparison to so many of her peers, who are more about showing their beauty than their chops. Sam Worthington is also starting to grow on me. His quiet, restrained performance in most of this movie was a good match for Csokas' more vociferous, piano playing leader.
I don't know how much play this movie will get with all the other fluff out there, but I found it a very suspenseful, fast moving and wonderfully acted and directed piece of entertainment.
I remember laughing my way through Hangover (the original) and even when watching it again later. Not so with Hangover Part II. What was fresh and funny about the first one, just became too much more of the same and more over the top in Part II.
Taking a lush location and giving it the same plot again didn't work for me.
The theater was full, but the laughs just weren't there like they were for The Hangover and I sensed that even though the audience was "there," the movie was no where near as clever or funny.
Old hat is just old hat and I had an honest laugh in only two instances in the whole movie. If you are 12-25 and male, you will probably find it to your liking.
If you are over 25 and a little more discerning, watch the original again for a good laugh.
Ben Affleck's stock went up tremendously with this movie. His direction was spot on and the acting turn, one of his best. Renner, Hamm, Hall and Lively, in their respective roles, do their part to make this an "edge of your seat," thinking man's action thriller.
Cruise and Diaz shine in this well written and directed action comedy. With so many chase movies that have left a lot to be desired, this one actually hits the spot with charm and chemistry between the leads and a story that keeps you interested. Good supporting cast too.
...but not as good as it could have been. The story has been done before and better (Midnight Run and Mr. and Mrs. Smith), but here we have two actors that could have been better served by a direction that seemed sadly lacking. Since the directors get much of the credit when a movie is good, it also stands to reason they should get the criticism when it is not. Decent actors are only as good as the direction.
I would recommend this movie with the caveat that it is what it is....a flawed romantic comedy with two charming actors (with better off screen chemistry then on) and a decent supporting cast which lacked passionate direction and the necessary heat to make it deserve another star.
...and was delightfully surprised how much I did!. This is a movie that is visually stunning and thoroughly entertaining from start to finish.
Yes the story has been told before and some of the characters are caricatures, but that does nothing to take away from the overall pure fun, emotional wonder and masterful visuals this movie provides the audience.
This movie is an old fashioned, no nonsense, intelligent political thriller that moves along at a clip and doesn't insult the intelligence of the audience.
Director Roman Polanski is in good form here and gets some good performances out of his cast . Olivia Williams is particularly good as the intelligent but neglected wife of Pierce Brosnan's Prime Minister. Ewan McGregor does a fine job in the title role.
In an era where demolishing cars and gore are the mainstay of most thrillers, this one relies on good story telling and plot. Well worth the ticket price.
