A beautiful film that is only made more impressive when viewed in IMAX. They use a brilliant plot twist that keeps the inevitable "that wasn't how it was in the original" comments that come with a prequel from happening. I did not like the fact that, as many prequels end up doing, the "old" technology looks a lot more advanced than the "new" technology. I understand that new CGI technology makes it easier to make a more "accurate" design, but wouldn't that just make it easier to make things look less advanced as well? We can now hope to see many more installments with this "new" crew in place without damaging the original story lines. Very well done.
From the very beginning, Cloverfield fails to put it's best foot forward. The movie gives just enough exposition of the characters so you know who they are and why they are there, but not enough for you to care who lives or dies. The "handheld camera" motion made me and several others sick to our stomachs. I was wondering going in why the film had such a short run time. The only thing keeping me in the theater was the thin hope that the movie would get a little better. No such luck. As little as we get to actually get to see the monster(s), you would think that they would have spent a little more time on making them look more realistic. I have to admit, the marketing scheme got me. I was expecting an action/sci fi, and got a very shaky episode of the OC meets War of the Worlds.
