In the book, Max gets crazy, does bad things, gets sent to his room. He goes where the wild things are, live their wild life as their king, and then decides it is enough, goes back home to his mother, who offers him soup.
Why on earth did they need to make the mother a single mom who has a boy-friend? Why on earth did they need to make the boy-friend kiss the mother and then Max gets mad and crazy. This is such a twist in the story it changes the whole meaning of it.
The rest of the movie is very slow, I almost fell asleep.
