It doesn't try too hard, it doesn't get preachy, it was incredible fanservice to any fan of comics in general and the Avengers in particular. Laugh out moments, high dramatic thrills and superhoic daring stunts. The actors knew their roles and interacted fantastically with one another.
Pros great story, great actors

Visually, an amazing movie, especially in 3D. I could have done without some of the heavy-handed preachyness (Technology BAD... er.. except the kind we're using to shift into these bodies.. and create them.., Industrial society = evil morons, etc) but the plot and story are rich enough to make up for it. There are plot holes, particularly at the end, that aren't covered, but these are likely only of notice to the more avid SF/F movie fan.
An excellent film, well told and with beautifully rendered visuals that evoked the mood of Neil Gaiman's story even if you'd had the sound turned off. The music had creepy influences that (if you could pull yourself away from the visuals to listen consciously) reminds you of the Nightmare Before Christmas, but the film stands on its own. I was surprised to see so many small children in the theater, though. If they're not old enough to read Gaiman's books on their own, you're likely in for some nightmares and should pick up a night light on the way home. There's no gore or sexual content, but the old style 'fairy tale' frighteningness of the story can bring chills.
