Good, But Not Quite Great

Star Trek is wildly entertaining cinema but not quite the slam dunk I was hoping for. Overall, I was impressed by the cast and the grand production values of this film. I believe the filmmakers treated the material with respect and did genuinely the best job they could, but a little more help at the writing table could have helped this film turn the corner. The biggest single fault of the film is how thin the villain's motivations are. There's lots of action, but the lack of attention to the plot hurt the film for me and detracted from what was otherwise great. I kept questioning the plot elements when clearly we're just supposed to "go with it." Also, don't expect many "money shots" of the shiny new Enterprise.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
