There aren't many of us who can say we saw the original Tron in a movie theatre. But fortunately you don't have to meet that qualification to enjoy this long-overdue sequel. Tron: Legacy was a visually stunning movie with an incredibly mesmerizing soundtrack by Daft Punk.
The writers were quite efficient in bringing everyone up to speed on what has happened in the past 28 years. They only needed about 15 or 20 minutes to tell that story and give us a good idea on what makes the main character Sam Flynn tick. The screenwriters knew that today's audience would get bored quickly, so after this brief intro, the viewer is immediately thrust into The Grid, just like Sam is.
Personally, I enjoyed that the 3D was understated, allowing us to enjoy the depth of the Grid but not be overwhelmed by the potential gimmickry.
There will be those who will say the movie stole direclty from Star Wars, Terminator, and others. I believe those are natural comparisons to make. But the storyline did lend itself to a more in-depth continuity, taking the seed established by the original movie and exploring it to a much more interesting and mind-bending depth.
Remember, it's a movie! I highly recommend you go see it for yourself! It's a great way to spend a couple of hours, and well worth the ticket price.
This movie went several steps beyond The Dark Knight, and in doing so could be a major influence on all adult-oriented comic book movies to follow. Most stats show that the average reader and buyer of comic books in this country ARE adults. Bottom line: You're going to see more movies like this come out, and they might FINALLY be taken seriously, a la Heath Ledger, for Oscar consideration - without the dyng thing. I nominate Jackie Earle Haley for Best Supporting Actor!
This movie was the perfect way to bring Indiana Jones back into our hearts and minds! It was the perfect blend of the 1950s, Rock 'N Roll, global conflict and politics, mythology - modern AND ancient - and science fiction.
Welcome BACK, Indy! Can't wait to see what's next!
