Downey is his usual self turning each character he plays into a caricature. He waltzes through this movie making a joke out of every line. He is such a jerk that it's hard to pull for him as a hero. Rourke on the other hand looks like a sleazeball but makes us buy into his revenge. For a while you pull for him until you find out his father wasn't the hero he remembers. Lot's of action and fight scenes but little else
This latest comic book to screen adaptation was better than most in that they didn't try to make a charicature of the main character. Robert Downey Jr. actually did a decent job and Jeff Bridges is great as the villain. Gwyneth Paltrow is wasted as the female interest. The movie does tend to drag on a bit as the technical jargon goes on and on during the setup to him becoming Ironman. They could have edited aoubt 10 minutes out of the movie and the pace would have been better. The animation does not look cartoonish and altogether it was an entertaining film.
This movie was good clean fun. Who wouldn't want to see Jet Li and Jackie Chan squaring off against each other. Older viewers will be pleased to see Jackie Chan reprise the Drunken Master charater of his earlier movies. The best scene in the entire movie, of course, is when these two masters of martial arts movies square off against each other. Although there is some harness work, most of the scene is a fast paced, well choreographed martial arts one-on-one. There is a good sprinkling of humor and light romance. All together, it was quite enjoyable.
