Can't understand all the raves for this movie. The premise is ridiculous - 30 years after a nuclear cataclysm people are still driving cars and eating canned food from before the bomb? Blaming the bible so all were burned and none saved - and the one that was saved was a Braille version that does not have Braille on the cover?? What happened when he got shot the first time? Better than Sherlock Holmes but not a great (or even very good) movie.
The mini-series simply was some of the best fiction that existed back in 1985. It was written against the backdrop of the Cold War, Mutually Assured Destruction, the Nixon Debacle, the Misery Index &the Oil Shortage just years earlier. It was a time of dimmed hope in our future- and the movie does a great job of pushing aside somewhat those themes which might not have resonated with today’s audiences and makes it more about human nature itself and largely succeeds. I purposefully did NOT re-read that mini-series that I loved all those years ago on purpose – I did not want to spoil any surprises and that was a very smart move. It was not nearly as good as Iron Man or Batman last year - but good enough for a March movie.
I went into this with low expectations - not a great Steve Carell fan - and a movie of a TV series is not usually much good - but this one made me laugh - there were enough inside jokes so that people who had seen the series would feel at home (seeing Bernie Koppel was great) but also it was fresh for both old viewers and funny for new viewers. Anne Hathaway looks like she has had some bad facial plastic surgery - but otherwise, this was a lot of fun!!
