Jonah Hex

Well, this was a fun way to spend an afternoon.
Jonah Hex takes various elements of the characters' comic history (which began in 1971), and blends them together in a fairly interesting story overall.
There are some liberties taken, as is typically the case with comic-to-movie stories, but not so badly as to completely mangle the character. As a long-time fan of the DC comic, there is a lot I would have like to have seen, but probably too much for an introductory film.
For my tastes, there were a few touches of "Wild Wild West", which is a few too many, but it could have been much worse. I could have done without the "Confederate Super-Weapon", and without the sci-fi style hardware that popped up, but these things do not totally ruin the movie.
Megan Fox turns in a good performance (the character she was based on in the comic is actually heavily scarred), and Turnbull makes for a good villain (in the absence of established comic villains like El Papagayo). Josh Brolin does a good job, and the make-up for the scarred bounty hunter was also well done.
I liked the touches of the supernatural that were used in the film (in the comics, Hex has no such ability), but others may find them distracting.
My preference would have been for more wild-west action and less emphasis on the post Civil War area, but that's just my personal taste.
The soundtrack/score was also good, and suited the mood.
All in all, I liked the film, and I would (and already have) recommend it to friends.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Iron Man 2: Simply Awesome

This movie is what I go to movies for.
Not merely a special-effects spectacle, the film has excellent elements of characterization, humour, and drama.
AND it's a fantastic comic-book super-hero film for all that.
Many of the elements of the comic book source material are included to good effect: the casual viewer will enjoy the film, but fans of the comic (particularly long-time fans like myself) will enjoy these even more.
The efforts to tie Marvels' films together in future projects (particularly Thor and Captain America) are well-seeded into Iron Man, and I have high hopes for these upcoming films.
The aspects of Tony Starks' various character flaws (taken from the original source works) are handled well: subtle, but well-done.
Samuel L. Jackson's role as Nick Fury was nicely expanded, and Mr. Cheadle introduced himself as LTCOL James "Rhodey" Rhodes remarkably.
The SPFX were masterful: perhaps not on par with James Camerons' Avatar, but this is also a very different kind of film.
All in all, I have to tip my hat to the folks at Marvel Comics: a top-notch job was done here.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Ninja Assassin: Genre Makes Good

After living through the 1980s, with some of the most terrible ninja movies ever made, I was absolutely delighted by this entry into the genre. Ninja Assassin slices it's way to the top of the Ninja movie genre, and raises the bar for others to follow.
Excellent fight sequences coupled with a good, solid story, and topped off with a return appearance of Ninja Master Sho Kosugi ( I realize he isn't actually a Ninja, but as I said, I lived through the '80s).
This is why I go to movies.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Iron Man Is Marvelous

I am a long time Iron Man fan, so I was both apprehensive and excited about the new movie. Iron Man, unlike the X-Men or Spider-Man has not really been one of Marvels' better known characters (although, he has two animated series and an animated film to his credit).
However, Robert Downey Jr very quickly shattered any doubts I had, and carried a very convincing Tony Stark onto the silver screen.
The generation of the character was moved out of the comic book origins, which take place in the Viet Nam War era (actually, most Marvel characters are products of the Cold War, Spider-Man and Daredevil being notable exceptions) and moved to more modern battlefields. This was handled very well, and led quite nicely into the evolution of the armour.
Also well-done was the development of Obadiah Stane as the nemesis (again, liberties are taken with the actual comic character, but they are well-handled liberties).
Tony Stark also evolves as he returns from his Middle East captivity a changed and changing man.
All in all, I have to applaud this latest effort from Marvel, and wish them much success with their future projects, which are aimed to take the money generated by Marvel characters, and put it where it belongs: in Marvels' hands, and not the studios'.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
