The original and the second HSM had the feeling of made for TV movies. This movie has much greater production values. The choreography in this installment was far better. The music was not quite as memorable, at least on the first pass. The chemistry between Zak Efron and Vanessa Hudgens continues to be electric. As an adult who has enjoyed these movies as fine examples of the American musical genre, I found each to be a perfect escape from adult reality showcasing some phenomenally talented young performers with big futures, Although I sincerely doubt that these movies resemble contemporary high school life, it sends a great message to tweens and teenagers regarding respect, inclusiveness and not rushing innto adult behavior. Bravo!
This movie is not at all what I expected. Although the lead character, played by Ricky Gervias, was highly unlikable if funny at first, the story arc of this character and a few others are remarkable and give you hope that people really can change. It also reminds us that difficult people are that way for a reason. The cast, with the exception of a rapidly aging Billy Campbell, was exceptional. I laughed out loud at several junctures. Go see it. Good for dates.
I am not sure why the critics are having such a problem with this movie. It was really well done. Anyone who really enjoyed the televsion show will totally enjoy the movie. My only minor complaint was that the movie seemed a little long. I suspect they needed to give each of the featured actresses a major story line to excite their interest. That being said, my movie companion and I had a great night -- we laughed, we cried and we left the theater more than satisfied.
