Long, boring, wildly overrated and since the subject is how important it is to preserve films and the emotional content nearly nil, inappropriate for kids.
The Meryl Streep (Julia) side of this story is far stronger than the Amy Adams (Julie) side, which has little plot other than the task of cooking many recipes. Small incidents are manufactured, like a split with Julie's saintly and somewhat unbelievable husband, but the conflicts are minor and unconvincing. None the less, Adams is charming. The film drags in Julie's half of the story but always cuts back to the inimitable Meryl Streep. The truth is the intercutting saves the film from tediium and disguises a shallow plot. But "Julie and Julia" remains a joy given the dreck in theaters lately. And it's another Oscar worthy performance from out best actress.
This is the most overrated movie I've seen in a long time. I never believed it for a moment. The stakes are meaningless. The relationship has no emotional content. Michael Clayton is Shakespeare compared to this one. It drives me nuts that both actors and reviewers fall for this kind of machine gun dialogue. It's arty farty and annoying, bearing no relationship to life, like radio you can't follow and don't care for anyway. The plot is unnecessarily complicated and by a half hour in, you've lost interest anyway. Skip it. This is not good adult entertainment. It's not entertaining at any age.
This film isn't as funny as you hope, and has long stretches, but I never left for popcorn and there are several big laughs. The rock and roll boyfriend is the most memorable character. All Apatow generated films are about the same thing: slightly flabby, not massively attractive, good-hearted men can't grow up. They are with controlling, pretty, up-tight women. The women are unsympathetic. The men are like labrador retrievers. Will the men win over, get over or dump the women? This is a variation on the same theme. It's still working, but wearing thin.
