I think this must be the first use of 3D I've seen that wasn't gimmicky and distracting. It was very light-handed, and really added to the experience. It was good to have subtle improvements to the realism of most scenes, but it wasn't at all about putting effects shots in your face, it was how real it made the characters presence. My hat's off to Cameron for this...
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Much better than Transformers 2...

The action was ratcheted up even further from the last one, not quite as much humor. And despite all the extra action going on, it was much easier to watch, because they dialed back on the zoomed-way-in-can't-figure-out-what-you're-looking-at and the 50-scene-cuts-per-second that made RoTF so hard to keep up with. The effects were impressive even by current standards. Huntington-Whiteley did fine as the eye-candy, but her character didn't really meaningfully or believably contribute to the plot - kindof just the ever-helpless damsel-in-distress - bah. One thing to note if you're thinking about bringing a kid just a little young for the rating - it is *mad* violent. I don't say it as a criticism, just an observation, but it's over-the-top even for an action movie, especially compared to the tone of the first. Go see it, you'll be glad you did, but you'll also get what I mean by that observation.
I think Pixar has mastered the rare art of creating sequels that live up to or exceed the originals.
Cars 2 had way, way, WAY more action, unbelievable animation (caught something that said they could have full photo-realism, but they back it off a bit to retain the cartoonish charm), and story line that's so much fun you never have a slow moment start to finish. Us and the kids came out of the show with big grins.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Decent story, but not laugh out loud funny

We were dying to see this based on some outtakes posted online (we were howling laughing), but for some reason they took out what was apparently the funniest scene by far, and what was left made you chuckle a few times and that's about it. Oversold and underwhelming, and we're waay on the easy to please side :\
