While I will freely admit that I am not a Jack Black fan I will say that many of his movies are pretty good.
However, this is not one of them. The adaptation of Jonathan Swift's story into a "modern" tale could have been done so well and I am disappointed that the *best* they could come up with featured "pee" humor and musical number with Black singing about war.
If you are a huge Jack Black fan, then rent this when it is on DVD. If you like Jack Black, wait for it on Cable.. anything below that, avoid this like the plague.
Amanda Peet, Emily Blunt, Jason Segal, and Billy Connelly can not offset the awfulness that is the writing, when you add in Jack Black being himself (or at least every character he ever plays) it makes for a total failure.
I do not understand what Black's obsession with requiring a musical number in his movies. Yes we get it, School of Rock was a success... PLEASE either go try to be a musician or act, but for the love of goodness stop smashing the two together!
****SPOILER ALERT***** The following section has details from the book
For those who have read the book, he condensed down getting *to* camp and removed the yearly trip his mom and he take, and I understand this for time and pacing. But from the moment he is at camp to him returning the lightning bolt is almost all different. They left out Ares helping him (and the credits list Ray Winston as Ares, and I was SOOOO looking forward to that). They dropped St Luis and put in a different city, and they dropped any mention of "I am hearing Chronos coming back" AT ALL. ************
If you are going because you want to see an exact movie from the book, save the money and wait for DVD.
