With this caliber of cast and this caliber of direction it is astonishing that a better story is so hard to find. The Butler-Did-It ending ruined the fun and made everyone I went to see the movie with just shake their heads and say " what a cop out ending". Oh well, at least the pace of the movie is speedy.
Pros acting
Cons forced ending ruins story
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Clearly Clint Eastwood is thinking about what happens after he dies, but this movie was more about how difficult human relationships are in life than anything to do with death. Older brothers who do not listen to each other, lovers who are insensitive and dismissive, mothers who are incapable of beating addiction to raise their children, foster life with little understanding and no communication -- hey anything that happens after that, be it weightless, white or all-being sounds great! Basically, forget about what happens afterwards and find the good in today with Matt Damon finally able to touch a hand without thinking about death. Too blatant. Very disappointing. I gave it 3 stars because the acting is really terrific.
I went to see this because I believe Robin Wright Penn is an underappreciated actress and rarely carries a film. I was not disappointed as she played this lost soul with patience, acceptance and respect. Alan Arkin is wonderful as a scared, aging discontent while Zoe Kazan ( Elia's granddaughter) and Keanu Reeves ( I know...I know) are also terrific. You can easily argue that the script has weaknesses and that the director, Rebecca Miller ( Arthur's daughter) is too much in love with her characters, but I love small character-driven movies with superb performances and if you are like me, I suggest you see this.
