Unsurprising

I had high hopes for this thriller, largely because of Helen Mirren and TomWilkinson. However I found the movie to be ponderous and predictable. It is beautifully produced, and the intertwining plots (1955 and 1966) work well. But the acting was below the level I had expected, and there was a bizarre and unsuccessful casting choice.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Intense and disturbing

Beautifully photographed, unusual insight into the physicality of ballet. Wonderful performances, notably from Barbara Hershey as the protagonist's crushingly ambivalent mother.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

For comic book lovers only

How sad that this transparently triumphalist, violent, nationalistic, and ultimately -- if covertly -- racist cliché of a comic book has been hyped so breathlessly by The NY Times. Its pretty and often surprising imagery, and its two-dimensional messages about environmental threats, the war in Iraq, the massacre of native Americans, etc., etc., do not obscure or excuse the ultimate poverty of this bloated potboiler. Moreover, while the Zoë Saldana character is fun to watch, Sam Worthington's lousy acting -- 10-feet tall, in three dimensions and three hours long -- bleeds through even all those layers of computer graphics.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Just for the visuals

Dreary, meaningless plot line, wooden Brendan Fraser, but the visual effects were stunning.
EXCEPT for the little bird that flew out of Disney's "Song of the South" to follow Josh Hutcherson around.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

Unbelievable Ledger, but 40 minutes too long.

This movie was about Heath Ledger. Every scene he was in was riveting, those without him tended to drag. His performance was pitch perfect, a real but unexpected interpretation of The Joker. The movie was visually fascinating -- perhaps a few too many explosions, but a great truck chase -- but I found the plot boring overall. Maggie Gyllenhall was at her fascinating best. However...the last forty minutes was just too much for me. I really lost interest.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

This movie is bad for you

There was much to recommend the movie cinematically. Wahlberg was excellent. Many of the suspense scenes were well done, and I found myself screaming at one intense point (not characteristic for me). But the content of the movie was nasty and evil and, I think, socially destructive.
No, I do not recommend this movie.
