Streep's just the best! It takes courage to play a dowdied-down role in a habit without (visible) makeup. And Amy Adams! I didn't recognize her at first until, "Enchanted!" popped in my mind.. Again, the nun get-up sans make-up.. Hoffman's character creeped me out, but that's because most priests do.. Excellent - a must see!
One poor woman behind me didn't heed the suggestions of those who'd gone before her to "bring tissues!" I grabbed a handful of napkins to go with my popcorn and used them all to blot up leaky eyes and nose. Whew!! That has to be the best tear-jerker I've ever seen. I love a good cry at the movies.
You couldn't have asked for a better cast. The costumes were fabulous. But do heed the advice of the reviewers and "Bring Tissue!"
It's not often a movie will make you burst out laughing, and in the next minute sadden you so you're wiping tears away, then bursting out laughing once more. It really confused my psyche, but I loved it! That's a real treat to have my emotions jerked around like that by a film. And it was so true to the Brits to have a dentist with crooked teeth...
I thought I was seeing an animated "I Am Legend" at first. I wasn't expecting a Disney film to cast such a cloud of doom and gloom. The animation was excellent, Wall-E was a cute little bot, but all the "green" propaganda left me cold. And it made the human race seem like nothing more than pie-hole stuffing imbeciles. I caught myself nodding off a few times because, if at home, I would have turned the channel to something more captivating, like the evening news.
I was disappointed and my grandkids were almost subdued when we were walking back to the car. Usually, after a movie, they're bubbly and asking questions like, "What was your favorite part? MINE was when the chipmunk was taking a shower in the dishwaher. And my SECOND favorite part was when....." But after this movie, nothing. We all agreed the animation was excellent, but wouldn't rent or buy the DVD when it comes out. Definitely not "classic" material.
I believe this movie has a majority of 4 star ratings versus 5 because: there was way too much sugar, happiness and light in the beginning. But after all, this is a children's FANTASY movie, and I'm a cynical old broad of 48. Happy-happy-joy-joy stuff makes me twitchy. But this movie wasn't for me. I took my 7-year-old grandson because he'd seen the trailers and thought it looked "cool." He really enjoyed Jodie Foster and her phobias. I think his favorite part was when she was trying to leave her house for the taxi that was waiting in the rain. As for me, I love Jodie Foster and it was interesting to see her in a comic role. And OH how my eyes leaked when she promised Nim she'd take care of everything towards the end. I certainly wasn't expecting to need tissues for this movie! The eyes of the lady next to me were leaking profusely also. :) Bottom Lines: You leave the theater feeling happy, and if that's what this movie was meant to do, it did the job very well. Like some other reviewers, I would have liked to have known what really happened to Nim's mom. I'm sure she didn't leave that island with Gerard Bulter on it willingly!! :)
...to think of something positive to say about this movie. After 6 days, all I can come up with is: the scenes where they are trudging through the snow in the mountains, then along the tops of sand dunes are beautiful. The rest is just plain wrong and I felt insulted. Come on! Everyone wore dreds, no one's teeth were rotten (not even the bad guys'), one tribesman had a neatly trimmed moustache and beard, they were multi-lingual (as if), and our heroine's mascara and eye liner were melting. Let's not leave out use of tightly woven cloth garments by some tribes, and the silky-looking garmets of The Almighty of the pyramids. It was skin of animals or bare skin back then. Cloth didn't exist.
And the hungry tiger seeming to "remember" a man's prior kindness by giving a man a break by not eating him? Please! The tiger's reputation was ruined as portrayed by this feeling, thinking creature. What happened to instinct? You wouldn't see THAT on the Discovery Channel!
At some point, I nodded off. Then I jerked up my head and looked over at my husband. He was asleep too, but hadn't started snoring yet. This was at 5:00 on a Sunday evening. We hadn't done anything all day, so we weren't tired - we were bored to sleep.
The movie was 1 hr. 49 mins. of time I truly regret wasting. I could have had a nice root canal instead.
Comical, romantic, bittersweet and poignant - men won't like it. It's not a date movie, but great to see alone or with girlfriends. I originally went for the costumes and setting of 1939 London, which looked great in the trailer. I was really pleased that there was a great story to go along with it all...
I figured this would be a chic flic that I'd have to see alone, but after mentioning it starred Jack and Morgan, my husband surprised me by agreeing to come see it with me. I'm sure he figured that no movie could be bad with these two guys starring. We LOVE them to the point of idol worship. They were superb as always in this flic which made everyone shed a tear or two if they were human. A funny, poignant movie that stays with you like a good dream that you'd like to get back to after waking up.
Annoying beginning with the overly-jerky camcorder of the first-time user effect. It messed with my equilibrium to the point I actually had to stop eating my popcorn (a first). But after the first explosion, my stomach settled down. The sound effects were great - had my body vbrating. Definitely a pic like Independence Day that you absolutely MUST see on the big screne. To view at home would lose the best of the sound effects, and they were what made the movie work for me.
