This one just didn't click somehow. From this cast and crew I expected so much more. Then again I've never thought the Wibberleys were very adept comedy writers.
We saw it in 2D. Possibly the wow factor of 3D would have helped. The animation was 1st rate but in 2009 you need more. The characters weren't developed enough for me to care about them, the plot was infantile and the writing just fell flat. I do realize I don't exactly fit into the target demographic, but it didn't look like the 10-year-olds were having much fun either.
There are great movies in theaters right now. Transformers, Harry Potter, Ice Age, The Proposal, The Hangover, and The Ugly Truth are six good reasons to not see this film. Wait to rent it on DVD.
I was prepared to dismiss The Proposal as just another mildly entertaining "formula" romantic comedy. I confess I completely underestimated this film. The theater was sold out to the last seat and I swear everyone there was rolling in the aisles the entire time. Bullock and Reynolds have great chemistry and pitch-perfect timing. They're supported by an incredible cast. Betty White, in particular, is a crack-up as the feisty 90-year-old Grandma Annie.
This is not one of those exasperating comedies that uses its four good jokes in its trailer. The writing is wicked-smart and belly-laugh funny and the entire cast sells it in every scene. They really hit this one out of the park! A nearly perfect film! 10+ Stay for the credits, by the way.
What a surprise this was! The story is engaging and Aniston and Zahn have unexpectedly magical chemistry. In fact the entire cast is splendid. We simply weren't expecting to like this film as much as we did. Aniston keeps doing movies that prove her to have the depth and insight of a truly fine actress. Zahn showed his chops as well. And since we just watched Remo Williams again the other night, it was great to see Fred Ward on screen. Seriously, if you can find this one playing near you, don't miss it!
