One element of Shyamalan movies that I enjoy is the whole "Everything happens for a reason" thing. The fact is, in real life, science cannot explain everything away. It is with a highly educated, thoroughly practiced methodology and a pinch of arrogance that a great deal of scientific discovery and knowledge is recorded. Sort of frightening when you think about it, but there it is. While its nice to have a little package presented to you, this is not neccessarily the case with The Happening. Its a movie that makes you think and, while there's no "definitive" answers, M. Night gets his point across; although that point is not the one some of the audience may have in mind. The only negative factor, I feel, was the acting. While I don't think there is anything wrong with any of the actors in particular, perhaps in this case different actors should have been used. Mark Wahlberg just didn't do it for me in this role. Again, I think he's a fine actor and all, just something didn't click. Additionally, I'd probably have to concur with some other reviewers regarding Zooey Deschanel in that she also didn't seem to quite fit. Overall, I would definitely recommend this movie and say that M. Night already has my money for his next film.
There is a certain lack of cohesion to the story. While this maybe is meant to add to the "terror" of the film, it just didn't do it for me. In fact, I was more annoyed than anything else. Further, there were moments that simply didn't make sense given the events that preceded them which really took my attention from the film to puzzle over. The film relies on cheap tricks that, while at first are successful at increasing the old pulse rate, eventually become rather boring. This is where the annoyance became more prominent for me. Some people might like the film because, at the very least, it does create a certain sense of paranoia; more power to ya. Honestly, I felt it was a waste of money, personally.
I was contemplating giving this movie 4/5 stars; then I remembered that it was a bit over 2 hours long. Honestly, it does not feel nearly that long. The movie is a perfect mixture of great action scenes and solid plot elements to keep one very interested throughout.
As other reviewer's have stated, there are some really nice fight sequences in this one. I'd really say there is something here for everyone though. The basics are here; your romance, action, comedy, etc.. But there's also a smattering of mythology, and the movie succeeds, I feel, in reaching a Western audience while having just enough of the Eastern appeal to keep me hooked. I know several times throughout I caught myself sitting in the theater with a goofy smile on my face. The movie is just really a lot of fun.
