This movie is a real waste of time. The dialogue is full of lowest-common-denominator humor. The character design shows no strong artistic sense or consistency. The use of 3D does not even rise to the level of adequate. There's maybe one or two funny lines. The best that can be said is that there are a few decent voice performances in it. This is piece of Hollywood product, plain and simple. Don't check in to the Hotel Transylvania!
My 11 year-old son was literally rolling on the floor laughing during parts of this movie. Considering the fact that he's read all the books several times, that's saying something. I've read the books, too, and enjoyed seeing the characters & situations come to life. Nothing will beat the original drawings & concise wit of the books but this is a worthy attempt and a lot of fun. Steve Zahn deserves special notice in the for his work in the role of Greg's dad.
Sacha Baron Cohen is a very funny man and has made a funny movie. However, it is just not as funny as Borat, which had more layers of humor. However, The Dictator goes in some unexpected directions and even provokes a little thought. Anna Faris is cute as a button and gamely sticks to the story. Likely better than most comedies out there.
An interesting combination of historical drama and superb action. The cinematography and production design are top-notch - eye-opening, in fact. Great performances as well from all involved - William Hurt and Max Von Sydow were great additions to the cast. Ridley and Russell do it again!
Let's cut to the chase: my 8 year-old was desperate to see this and it entirely lived up to his expectations. His hysterical laughter was worth the price of admission. He gives it 4.5 stars!
I enjoyed the movie enough but felt it could have been better. My main complaint is that terrific character actors like Jonah Hill and Ricky Gervais were essentially reduced to cameos. The scene with Jonah Hill was great - it would have been more satisfying to have him reappear at some point in the action.
Other than that, it was a well-edited, fairly witty movie. Seeing JeffKoons balloon dog and other famous artworks come to life was delightful.
Good old-fashioned fun. My seven year old boy loved it! Nothing very intense or scary. From my point of view it was a bit simplistic - almost schematic - but entertaining. There were a few moments of near parody - hopefully intentional. The 3D was a hoot.
Fun to see the old gang again in this somewhat lumbering adventure. Some great set-pieces but the fleet-footed abandon of the first three is not quite there...
I would give it 3.5 stars if I could. For a summer blockbuster with the kids you could do a heck of a lot worse!
