Similar to the groundbreaking filming of Kubrick's "2001 - A Space Odyssey", Avatar is visually and sound wise a stunning film -- that quite apart from the plot & message, make the film well worth 2hrs & 40 minutes of your time, particularly if you see it in IMAX 3D. The high-tech glasses were a nuisance to wear (over my own glasses), but I guess that's the price to pay for a phenomenal 3D experience given the current state of the art. The acting of the "real" actors & the animated characters was great (I'm 55 and have always been a S. Weaver fan from "Alien" days). The plot & message were classic Sci-Fi, and brought a tear or two to some in the audience & a fair number of loud rejoicing yells during the battle scenes from others!
Just like I heard the reviewer say on the nightly news tonight: true story & happy ending. I don't know how "true" vs "inspired by", but it's my understanding that much of the story of this famous football player is true. Heart warming & revealing, may just have you teary eyed within the first few minutes. Superb acting and plenty of comic relief.
Well done reboot of the series with superbly talented folks on both sides of the camera. Fans of the original series (who actually saw the original shows when they first aired), (yea - I'm that old) may be a bit disappointed with the "re-boot," but I think everything considered, they have done an excellent job. I look forward to the next one.
I prefer the original 1951 Robert Wise version, but many SciFi fans will not regret seeing this in the theatre vs waiting for the DVD. Contrary to some other professional reviews, the plot & special effects will hold the interest of many a SciFi fan; most of the science is well done; there is a positive review online on Scientific American's website worth checking out, if you are undecided about seeing this film. Enjoy!
