Well, I'd seen the trailer, but I hadn't heard of the book. It seemed like it was going to be a touching comedy, but it turned out to be so much more. It is a poignant drama that elicits the whole range of emotion, but there will be a lot of tears. It's sure to elicit a wide range of emotion depending upon the social and racial demographic of the viewer, but it seems honest if not terribly balanced. The acting was powerful. Having not read the book, I take it that some characters were included here due to a larger role in the book, but they were superfluous and unnecessary in the movie, such as Skeeter's boyfriend. However, I went because I'd heard it was a good movie, and I left moved and thinking some acting academy awards should be pending. It's a really powerful, should-see movie.
