This is a fairy tale morality play that leaves the real drama out. Of course movies need villains. So this movie identifies greedy Wall Street types and ... biological evolution? ... as the cause of the 2008 meltdown. Not enough fools to be believable. As for the new improved Gordon, I didn't believe the ending. Still, entertaining.
avoids almost all the tedious cliches of horror movies today. this is a horror movie in the classic style ... the horror is internal ... as you find yourself rooting for the "splice" along with the scientists who created her. the most original retelling of the Frankenstein story in a decade.
Avatar takes movie making to a new land. It is not just a series of spectacular effects. It is immersive.
The story is rather predictable. So was the story of the original Star Wars. But like that movie, it is the telling of the story through a new cinematic language that makes it great. After all, there are only about a dozen stories in all of human culture. Only in the telling is there art. And there is some reat art in Avatar. You are subsumed in the effects and the cinematography.
This is the first movie since the year 2000 that is of the next century rather than the last.
