I went to see WARRIOR with my boyfriend last night. I chose it because I had read very good reviews ... but I was skeptical ... sort of expecting a one-dimensional, worn-out, predictable ROCKY re-hash. Was I ever wrong. Even though this film is 2 hours plus, I was glued to the screen for all of it. It is a complex study of a damaged family, populated with multi-layered characters and a rich, thoroughly engrossing plot. The fight scenes are gripping, shocking and amazing ... and Nick Nolte simply MUST be nominated for an Oscar for his heartbreaking performance. It is definitely his comeback role. Lastly, this movie is not tied up with a pretty red bow at the end (which most audiences sadly seem to prefer), and you are left to draw your own conclusions about the fate of each figure. I highly recommend this film ... I am still mulling it over and truly impressed by the stellar performances. Go see it.
I took my boyfriend to see this film last night, without telling him what we were seeing or that it was in French with subtitles (which would, usually, be a deal-breaker with him). I had read the NYTimes review and was intrigued - especially knowing it's based on a true story. I was not disappointed ... and was THRILLED to see how much my easily distracted boyfriend was utterly engrossed as well. Yes - this movie is violent and reaches into the dark recesses in the mind of a reckless sociopath with extreme criminal tendencies. He lives in a dark underworld of robbers, whores, pimps, killers and ill-gotten gains. He is ruthless, clever, calculating, daring and not afraid to die in order to live the only life he knows ... and achieve the adrenaline rush he craves. Dangerous women are drawn to him like magnets, men want to kill him in revenge for his deeds and he lives by the code of honor among thieves ... he keeps his word at all costs - whether it is to come back and kill you, or free you from prison after he's busted out. I can't wait to see the second installment. This was a thoroughly exciting, engrossing film ... knowing that it's based on a real man (and a really dangerous one, at that) who made a vow to "get out or die" ... and lived on such an edge ... it's just amazing. You can't make stuff like this up. Definitely not for the squeamish or morally rigid. I do recommend it as a tremendously absorbing look into the life and mind of a charming, unhinged criminal ... people like him really are out there.
AVATAR is, basically, DANCES WITH WOLVES with blue people and flying dragons, set on an alien planet in the future. Pretty unoriginal as far as plotline. The special effects are fun, but seeing it in 3-D is totally unnecessary. The IMAX screen is a good touch but, yeah ... 3-D is a waste.
