This may actually be a good year for movies. The first movie in a long time that had me on the edge of my seat. Liam Neeson is so good in his dual role of victim/assassin that you forget how hokey the plot is. At least the end explains why a scientist is such a good stunt driver.
This movie will be reviewed on the basis of whether or not one agrees with the premise of the film maker. I have never before seen a movie that generated so much post-film discussion in the lobby. If you agree with the film maker, you'll love Waiting for Superman. If you are a teacher, you'll probably hate it as did many of the teachers in the audience.
This is one of those movies that gets hyped on the internet before it is released because no one will go see it after word of mouth reviews come out. A lot of people walked out before the end, but I kept waiting for the payoff that never came. I can't believe I wasted the time on this movie.
Why Terrance Howard is appearing in this low budget movie is a mystery, but Fighting does have some plusses going for it. The movie shows aspects of New York not usually seen and it has a 'real' feel to it. Great characters pop up in the movie and they don't come off as stereotypes. The ending was a little too predictable, but it was handled well.
I left the theatre after 15 minutes because I could not see the point in watching a movie I had seen before - and with better actors. Exactly what was the point - other than creating a role for Beyonce - of making another movie about a delusional woman attempting to take someone else's husband ? I rarely walk out on a movie, but this one appeared to be a waste of time.
I've seen over 100 new releases this year and this is the best movie I can remember seeing in 2008. Watching Slumdog Millionaire makes you aware of just how mundane and contrived most Hollywood movies are these days. I hope this movie gets the wider audience it deserves.
The actors commit so fully to the characters, we forget we are watching a comic book brought to life. This is no tongue in cheek action hero movie with Batman and his boy wonder sidekick. This Batman is more akin to Iron Man than Hellboy or Hancock, and as such, will get a huge female audience. Of course, the Joker is the focus of this movie and I can only second the opinion of other reviewers. He is absolutely the best villain in a Batman movie to date.
I enjoyed Hancock, but it was a little too obvious that this is not a one shot deal. You feel like you are being set up for a sequel or perhaps a prequel. If that is not the reason so little information is provided about Hancock's origins, then someone should have made the movie longer to fill in the gaps.
