This one was all about Mel's character's pain, and I wasn't feelin' it. He plays a not particularly clever Boston cop unable to thwart this corporate conspiracy in an intelligent manner, so the guns come out—getting a number of innocent people killed along the way. Audaciously, he pretends his daughter endorses this mad bloodshed.
Overall a competent film and Mel's clearly doing his best, but nothing we haven't seen before.
I thought it was beautifully made and very well-acted, especially by Saoirse Ronan. My gripe would be at the story level: I felt the main conflict between the victim and her murderer was not satisfyingly resolved. I don't always demand a Hollywood ending, but for a film about a dead girl, a little more feel-good would have been nice.
Delivers exactly as promised - romance, adventure, humor - "Romancing the Stone" for kiddies and kanines. Great stunts and impressive CGI - rat and iguana characters were thoroughly convincing. If you think you would like this movie, you probably will. Includes nice messages about adopting strays and NOT adopting pets if you're not up for the responsibility.
