Having never read any of the books, I had no idea what to expect. Now I can't wait to read the trilogy and wait for the next movie installment. The acting was great, and everyone was perfect in their roles. There are some very difficult scenes to get through; this could have been an NC-17 rated movie. Do not take your children! Once the 2 main characters connect, the movie really takes off. Not for the faint of heart, but worth it.
Natalie Portman does an OUTSTANDING job with her performance - Oscar caliber hands down. That said, this movie could have gone further if the character development was as strong or as frequent as the sex scenes. I saw this movie with my 69 year old mother - I was afraid she would go into shock, which she didn't, but I did! The sex scenes were just too much, too predictable and yet too detached from the theme of the movie. To compare, the German film Aimee & Jaguar had intense lesbian scenes, but were tied in so strongly to the story line you were drawn in. In this movie, they seemed more for shock value. The dancing was wonderful, and I hope Portman gets all the accolades she deserves - she was excellent :).
Hands down, this is the best movie released this year. Every woman, regardless of color, can relate to at least one character in this movie, especially if she's had issues in a relationship. But brace yourself - this movie will pull very deep emotions out of you and will leave you talking. For those doing wrong in a relationship with a woman......be prepared to hit the road when she sees this movie! Every actor and actress played their role to the HILT! Janet Jackson's acting is truly impressive - everyone is impressive! Tyler's work in this picture is a phenomenon. Get your rest now, Tyler, because come this winter you will have an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, at minimum.
Truffles3 said it all. This was an amazing documentary showing the MOF competition and all it entails for the chefs and their family members. Pastries require a much more scientific approach than cooking, and it is truly amazing to see how sugar and chocolate can be transformed into incredible works of edible art. And I agree with eating small portions of really good food every day instead of binging on junk on the weekend. Awesome job!
Tyler Perry did a great follow up to the first WDIGM? However, I also agree with others who would have liked to see more explanation why Patricia was so controlling. We can assume why, but I really wanted more of her story to come out. Everyone did a wonderful job, and overall it was a solid movie.
This is one of the best movies ever made. Lee Daniels really did the book justice, with a tweak here or there. Mo'Nique was utterly transformed in this role. When I read the book years ago I wondered who would ever play such an evil character; I never would have guessed Mo'Nique, but she knocked it out the park. And Gabby was outstanding; if this was her first performance she will redefine the world of acting. Thank you Sapphire for shedding light on a way of life too many people suffer. It doesn't matter where you start, it matters where you finish. I am utterly exhausted after watching this, but it was worth every tear and laughter.
The story development is pretty thin, but overall this was a great movie. I saw it in a theater full of teenagers and was worried they would talk or text though the movie. Not a single one did - we were all riveted. Could not sleep well the night after; every creak the house made freaked me out. Starts out slow, but it picks up and makes up for it after 30-45 minutes.
I saw this movie yesterday - it was the best one I've seen this summer. The plot was great - I felt slight disgust for the aliens at first, but Christopher and his son won me right over. The eviction scene was very moving, and the cast was excellent (thank you for not shooting this in the US; we could not get the message while in our comfort zone). For all of the naysayers, just imagine if you were very far from home, couldn't get back or call home, the locals kept you in isolation, deeming you an unwanted, uneducated, scavenger threat, and there was nothing you could do. Can't wait for District 10 - hang on Wilkus!
