Apatow's latest is good, but schizophrenic--it starts off as a genuinely funny depiction of the seamy side of standup comedy, and with Seth Rogen and Jonah Hill at the helm, it's hilarious. But then it goes off the rails when the focus shifts to Adam Sandler's illness and subsequent rekindling of an old love affair. Blecchhh--pretty soggy. And, for the record, not very believable. Sandler is sometimes funny, but it's Seth Rogen who saves the movie, with his combination of humor and pure sweetness.
Horror movies these days are either overly gory, or not scary at all--with nothing in between. ORPHAN is a welcome relief for the horror film fan who appreciates good acting, good production, and a good twist at the end. Esther gets my vote as one of the creepiest kids ever, and there are many genuine thrills and chills. My only quibble-- one of the main characters goes through enough trauma to be dead many times over. Enough said (don't want to give anything away). That, and what ranks as one of the worst therapists of all time! ORPHAN gets my vote as a movie you should go out and see. It won't change your life, but it'll creep you out enough at bedtiime that you'll still be thinking about it before closing your eyes.
