The story is simple - no surprises anywhere - but it was still able to entertain two parents, an 11-year old, a 16-year old, and a very jaded 21-year old.
For any fan of the original series and movies, you'll be entertained from beginning to end in another time twisting, inside out take on the crew of the Enterprise and it's adventures. My teenaged son and his friends thought it was incredible and they're not versed in the original, so it seems to work for everyone.
Or send in the younger kids with a responsible sibling and take your spouse to something else playing at the multiplex. There is certainly enough material here for there to be a good movie but Jack Black has siezed on virtually none of it. I usually enjoy his movies, even if they are not works of art, and enjoy Jason Segal too (what an awful accent!) but this =was a big miss. Kids (two 14 year old boys and a 9 year old boy) didn't seem to notice how terrible it was, though.
The movie is full of humor but Colin Firth is also fantastic conveying King George the VI's pain as a stutterer. The movie has an unjust R rating. Yes, there is foul language but it is very specific in its use, in limited scenes (3?) and not gratuitous. There's a great lesson here for kids, so unless you are an absolute prude, don't worry about bringing children who are old enough to understand the film.
I took my then four year old son to Toy Story on its opening day in 1995. It was an experience I will never forget. It was charming. Flash forward over 14 years later and that little boy (who got to see the movie twice that weekend - as did I), just finished his freshman year in college and, as cynical as he is, even he saw the magic and emotion in this film. His 8 and 13 year old brothers saw the Pixar magic and the wonderful story too but him mom and me, saw much more than a kids movie. It was a very unexpected and moving experience.
Big, loud and visually stimulating, the story was overdone, too long, too predictable, too heavy-handed and borrowed too much from too many other movies. If you have kids who just "have to see the movie" (and most of them will "have to" and will love it) the IMAX experience is the only way to go.
Definitely a toned down Adam Sandler. Not one of his best nor one of his worst. The kids (7 and 12) LOVED it and I was sufficiently entertained to make it worth my while
