I am a huge fan of Jackie Chan...I have watched and re-watched virtually every movie he's had at least a modest role in. As hard as it is to him "hang up his jacket" as an action star in movie after movie now, I still enjoy watching his movies inclusive of Shinjuki Incident (drama), where he performs no martial arts at all.
Meanwhile, Jaden, the young prodigy of comedic, action, thriller, and rap star Will Smith (Fresh Prince), shows tremendous promise with athleticism, good character development, and a fairly strong presence. He shows significant potential as an action star although his emotions seemed a bit dry .
The story, while following the basic outline of the original Karate Kid mixed it up extremely well with the changes in culture, location, aspects of the story, and interactions.
It would have been nice to see Jackie Chan's character not be so dry, but unfortunately, the original Miagi character was as such and his character stayed close in form to the original minus the drinking.
The story gives a very good feel for the bullying that children can fear, and it helps illustrate important ways to try and help overcome it through self-defense. Our children, girl-6 and boy-10, were both glued to the screen despite the fact that the movie is lengthy.
You rather wished the movie weren't to end. It was very good, indeed!
I took my 4 and 8 year old kids as well as one of their 6 year old friends, a mixture of ages as well as boys and girls. Everyone enjoyed this movie...it was done superbly and although a bit predictable to parents, at least overall, it was truly entertaining. Stay for the credits...
