If all you want is vulgarity, go. I'm not a prude; I've been to plenty of frat parties. There simply was no redeeming anything. I've only seen one other movie as bad. This is an insult to college students and especially to fraternity students. It's crude- women walking around topless, guys drinking shots off of other guys rears, homosexual males in glowing organ covers and contant use of the "F" word coupled with drunks throwing up. It is sex for the sake of sex with an audience and vulgarity for the sake of vulgaity. There was not humor in it. Admittedly, I did not read the rating as I let my husband do the checking today. He read the summary and it sounded funny.
I was thoroughly entertained. I wasn't sure what to expect of a movie made from musical theater made from music. I loved it, my husband loved it. My son's girlfriend who saw it with her mother loved it. It was fun. The nearly full theater clapped when it ended. We laughed and walked out of the theater with huge smiles on our faces. I had tears-I'm not sure if they were from laughing or from the poignancy. Parts were predictable and parts surprising. It didn't matter; we were having a good time. Isn't that the purpose of summer movies? I wanted to sing along-but knew better with my voice. Some of the filming, especially the top views, allowed the musical numbers to shine like they can't in a theater. I loved the hippie Meryl Streep; Amanda Seyfried could be her daughter and Walters, Baranski and the rest of the cast were just right. I could see it again and probably will-just for fun.
I really enjoyed the storyline even though it took a bit of liberty with the book. I was glad it did not get hokie at the end. The metaphor to the Bible was very subtle yet obvious if you know the background. The acting was believable and the animation well done. A bit dark for young people but most of the gore was implied rather than actually on screen so parents may be a able to get away with taking younger less mature viewers though they probably would not enjoy the story since it is a more mature adventure than LWW
