Public Enemies is a thoughtful look at the life of John Dillinger. It is violent but avoids the over-the-top slow motion mayhem that is too often Hollywood's answer for a crummy script. The longest gun battle--a nighttime scene--serves to show the confusion and chaos resulting from an ill-conceived attack by over-anxious police. The Dillinger in Public Enemies is a man who does not seek violence as an end in itself but neither does he hesitate to instantly resort to violence when it is expedient. This is not The Godfather. It is more reminiscent of an old Jimmy Cagney movie than the work of Francis Ford Coppola. Looking for great cinema? Keep looking. Looking for an entertaining way to spend a few hours? Try Public Enemies.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
