Excellent if over-long

The movie was very intricate and detailed in introducing the new characters Harvey Dent and The Joker.
I thought that some of the plot threads, while necessary given the rest of the story, took too long to resolve and distracted from the main plots of the movie mainly Dent and The Joker.
Batman, for the most part, was vehicle for the story and not a central element. Similarly, the characters returning from the first movie Alfred and Lucius Fox were not main characters which was dissapointing.
Heath Ledger did an excellent job taking an iconic character who could have been just a standard diabolic villan and turned him into something special and an instant classic.
Overall the new Batman movie lacked some of the character developed for Bruce Wayne seen in the first movie, but it made up for it with more interesting and well rounded villans and some spectacular fx and fight sequences.
