We went to see this because we loved "The Triplets of Belleville", and the artistry and animation was indeed wonderful. However, the story was very difficult to grasp and lacked cohesion. In general the plot was depressing and the characters lacking in charm. As with "The Triplets", the film lacked actual language as such and the faux dialogue was pretty easy to follow. I kept hoping for an upbeat ending, but despite the wonderful artistry, it was all pretty bleak. I definitely would not take a child to this film.
Based on the trailers, we expected a comedy. What a shock when it turned out to be a really wrenching depiction of a man so walled off from personal relationships that his real feeling of being home was when he was flying. Although my first reaction was that the film was depressing, on further review I thought it thoughtfully depicted the Clooney character's return from his alienation, not in a sweeping "happy ending", but in several scenes reflecting growth into his own possibilities with his family, his profession, and his personal life. A really good movie, actually better than I expected.
