this movie was built up big, so maybe that's why i was so disappointed. bradley cooper was good, but it wasn't an oscar worthy performance as some have wondered. jennifer lawrence, however, gives a stunning performance and carries much of the movie. robert de niro's small role is hilarious, with too little screen time. the same could be said for chris tucker, though his role was as big as it should have been, despite his great showing. i liked it, but was disappointed, typical romcom.
Pros great story, great actors
Cons slow, predictable
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Not Cruise/Duvall's Worst, Definately Not Their Best
the movie's plot is OK, and I laughed out loud several times during the movie...it's really funny in places. unfortunately, i was about the only moviegoer laughing - the rest of the theatre just didn't get it. sad. if you like the genre, go. if you are a cruise/duvall fan, go. otherwise, stay away.
with jude law and rdjr, and guy ritchie's direction, there was probably no way i wouldn't like this movie. it's a creative and refreshing take on the classic, and the action is incredible. there could have been more development of the adversaries, but as the first of what i'm sure will be a series, i was very happy. a must see.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, great action
ok, ok, yes, it starts very slowly. and, yes, i've seen many better movies this year. that said, if you like soprano-esque mob movies, this might be your favorite film this month. the performances were good all around, but the story lacks, especially at the start. some of the effects are phenominal (shooting scenes for starters), but the constant background chatter about the 2008 financial meltdown does get really old, really quick. i liked it, see at your own risk...
Pros great actors, original story
Cons slow start, abrupt ending
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Stunning Visuals, Incredible Acting, Accurate Depiction Of History, So So Story
this movie was stunning visually - the recreation of the era was unbelievable, from the architecture, rugs and furniture, to the lamps and costumes, down to each cobweb and speck of dust. the performances were excellent from each character, but of course kudos must go to ddl, sally field and tlj, who were all remarkable in their respective performances. the portrayal of politics of the time was all engrossing at first, and incredibly interesting. then there's the story. ahh, the story. the passage of the 13th amendment, the end of the us civil war, and the assassination of lincoln. it pulls you in at the beginning, watching the behind the scenes workings to assure passage of this most important amendment, but then, somewhere, it fails, and it fails spectacularly. it just seems like business as usual, just like today's political system. sure, it's good to know nothing's changed - but, then again, nothing's changed, and i go to the movies to take a break from all of the nonsense, not shell out big bucks to watch more of the same at the movies. glad i saw it, enjoyed every minute, but wish i had waited for rental, streaming, or movie channels.
Pros great actors, excellent performances, unbelievable visually
i was disappointed with part one of breaking dawn, but part two made up for the disappointment. good ending to the saga, and the story moves at a steady pace. there's not much fluff in part two, but of course there's plenty of longing, loving, danger, self-sacrafice, revelations, angst, etc., etc., etc. if you have seen the previous three, you must go, and you will be glad you did.
Pros well paced, great story, good action, it's done!
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Great Bond Flick, Great IMAX Flick, A Little Disappointing
before you judge my 3/5 star review, remember that i thought this was a great movie, well worthy of the imax bucks, and a most ejoyable watch. that said, compared to the last two bond movies with dc, this was disappointing for a couple of reasons. first, the story line was too closely in line with mi1, and my mind kept drifting towards this throughout the movie. second, there was so much focus on character development, it sometimes overshadows the recycled storyline, which is also distracting. that said, the opening bond action sequence is incredible, the adele song is spot on (kudos to adele), and this entire film has hints of bond movies christmas past. i enjoy cheesy bond stints as much as the next bond fan, but at times it's pulled off poorly (as in the scene with m/bond in the car), and comes across as cheese only for cheese sake. even aside all of this, the movie entertains completely, and i recommend it in imax for an incredible night out.
when i went to see flight, i had read none of the reviews or synopsis. based on the trailers, i decided to plunge headfirst into the unknown, generally a bad idea for me, i'm so picky about the movies i shell out bucks for. this was a great night of entertainment! the effects of the plane ride and subsequent landing were phenomenal, leaving me grabbing the arm rest. but the true glory is in the story of the rise and fall of the pilot, his co-conspirators, his character traits both good and bad, and his ability to finally grasp responsibility for his own actions. i didn't know until the end how this was going to play out, and that's just how i like my morality plays, ever since star trek. this is a great bit of entertainment, with wonderful performances not only from denzel washington, but don cheadle and bruce greenwood, too, and john goodman was hilarious during his short tenure. a great watch i highly recommend.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, entertaining, great effects
the initial reviews were too good to be true...and they were right. this story spans any age (over young teens), but is especially remarkable if you remember the time (i was young). great performances by all, with special mentions for alan arkin and john goodman. the artwork for the time was spot on, along with the attitudes. it's a spy thriller with islamic extremists, with the best and worst of hollywood, great entertainment, and a true story to boot. not to be missed.
Pros well paced, great story, great actors, phenomenal artwork, good effects
