The Life of Pi starts slow as "character development" takes place. Then a major incident takes place that is unexplained in its origin and leads to the predicament that lasts throughout the film. I was ready to leave the film within the first ten minutes but my sons, who've read the book, said, "Dad, it gets better." They lied.
The theme? Suffering. Human suffering. Animal suffering. If you like to watch a human being and an ever decreasing cast of CGI animals suffer, then perhaps this is entertaining or thought provoking. But it certainly is not a movie for an escapist or a relaxing few hours.
Hollywood and film critics will adore this pluralistic film for the way the main character synthesizes his religions, but there's no real connection in the early religious development to the rest of the film.
What is stunning is the CGI, 3D effects, and cinematography. And my sons, who love animals, really enjoyed the tiger, merkats, whale, etc. The reality is the zoo would have been money better spent since at least those animals are real.
Walking out of the film, I felt like I watched a poor retread of Castaway (which I didn't appreciate either). Only this film had no Tom Hanks or even a loveable volleyball.
Pros great cgi
Cons bad acting, slow, irrelevant to life
No, I do not recommend this movie.
