Now I miss Heath Ledger even more.

I've been a fan of his since the beginning of his career and was so sad that we weren't going to witness him becoming the experienced craftsman he was clearly meant to be. This film showed another step on his way there. His performance as the Joker blew me away. Really. I had heard all the hype but was waiting to see for myself. And I saw and am telling you not to miss it.
There's so much to be said on top of that. Heath's performance was only one of the fabulous things about this movie. All of the performances were incredible. The gadgets and gizmos were really great. There was a wonderful mixture of humor and terror and vulnerability.
The last thing I want to say is that I love how this and the last Batman movie make me think of some of the better samurai films. Figuring out where the line is that you won't cross; what is right and wrong; how not to lose your humanity when you do inhumane things to others; how to live with grief; and so much else. The Dark Knight wants you to think about the challenges that come when an individual makes choices for others and then must shoulder that responsibility. That is much more than simply a action film.
Yes, I recommend this movie.

Hellboy is hot!

And I do mean Ron Perlman as Hellboy. He's one of the best people out there, in my opinion, doing parts requiring a lot of body make-up. He's always believable, always natural in it, and - at least in this case - the most wonderfully swaggering, loyal, well-intentioned, funny, moral, sexy and kind hellspawn I could wish for.
That said, I am also a huge Guillermo del Toro fan, and his creativity never disappoints. There were a few truly amazing creatures, a nice nod to earth magic, and a lot of lovely intricate details everywhere you looked on screen.
The one detracting feature for me was a new character made of ectoplasm. I feel it could have been a really cool addition, but there was so much schtick and stereotyping attached to him that I eventually became annoyed.
There were also a few too many creatures for me this time. I would have preferred it to be less effects-driven and more character-driven, but when all was said and done - there's no way I would have missed it.
Hellboy is still my movie star boyfriend.
Yes, I recommend this movie.
