'RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE' has earned * star (out of 4) from me solely on visual aesthetics. I knew this movie would not be good, but I did not expect it to be this BAD. I have seen the 3 previous Resident Evil's in the theater and thought the last one, Extinction was the best of the bunch; so it was disappointing how ...laughable this next one was. Speaking honestly though, I was not bored by this music video, I mean movie; it looked good and I was entertained, but take caution--it will insult your intelligence the entire time.
By the time you leave the theater, you will have witnessed: - every cliche' on the genre checklist (to the point that Stallone's 'COBRA' seems ground breaking) - acting so shamefully inept in some cases (the villain & others) that I wonder if SAG cards are being revoked? - facial hair so impeccable I thought I was watching '10,000 B.C.' - gratuitous 3-D which is taken advantage of in every way imaginable (filmed with James Cameron's 3-D camera technology) - daft usage of sunglasses in a climactic close-up shot - slow motion as a supporting character...and the most agile giant zombie I have ever seen wielding a battle-axe.
It is clear that the studio's target demographic for this installment are third graders in vegetative states. Only a special talent like Paul W.S. Anderson could bring us a $60,000,000 mistake and since these movies always make money, be confident that part 5 will undoubtedly be forthcoming. Go see this film if you are being treated to it by someone who enjoys tormenting you.
No, I do not recommend this movie.

MACHETE is pure FUN

MACHETE is the wildest ride at the movies since the trailer premiered during Grindhouse three years ago. Machete delivers as promised on EVERYTHING you could ever want in a film of this nature and you are left having one hell of a good time at the movies. This was worth the wait!
To those taking this movie seriously, you are missing the point completely. Nothing in this film is meant to be taken as anything but over the top, ridiculous, adrenalized fun. The political undertones, while timely considering today's political climate, are used primarily as a jumping off point to get to the action scenes.
Do not forget this film was first made as a trailer and after fan persuasion over two years, Robert Rodriguez decided to make Machete into an actual film and starring showcase for Danny Trejo. They had to work backwards to create a storyline from what they had already shot as a trailer; most definitely a novel approach to film-making.
I think it all comes together nicely with a great cast and non-stopped hilarity. If you do not enjoy this film, then clearly you do not 'get' this movie and probably did not 'get' Grindhouse either.
Thanks and congratulations to Danny Trejo, Robert Rodriguez, Steven Seagal and Jeff Fahey and everyone else involved in this masterpiece of mayhem. I was beyond pleased with this first Machete film and eagerly anticipate Machete Kills and Machete Kills Again.
Review – ‘The Expendables’ Rated R Overall Rating: ***stars (out of 4)
This movie is exactly what you would expect it to be. It has an amazing line-up of stars, action throughout and a premise that is as classic as it is cliche'...but it all works. You can credit Stallone's intelligence behind the camera for crafting a head-to-toe thrill ride complete with cameos, carnage and comedy.
Those of us who grew up watching the 80's action films have been looking forward to a movie like this for many years and I, in particular, have been excited for The Expendables for well over a year. I remember reading the weekly casting notices online as one big name after another, was added to the film’s roster of talent. I and many others were getting more and more excited for this movie as the weeks went on, culminating in a fever pitch. And to have finally seen it and enjoyed it, was a grand experience.
I was not going into the theatre expecting anything less than over the top action and zany one-liners; and for the most part, I got exactly that, along with some heart. The heart was provided by Mickey Rourke in a brief, but memorable role as a member of Stallone's team who is having doubts about his life's work and the existence of his soul after years of violence-for-hire work. He has a monologue in one scene that is truly a joy to watch; a real actor at work. Rourke rules. Eric Roberts was also a standout for me as the film’s villain: an ex-CIA operative gone rogue in a small island off the gulf of Mexico who muscles the island’s weak general into producing Cocaine while destroying a once beautiful country.
The Expendables is fun from beginning to end with the outrageous amount of action and blood we have come to expect and enjoy from a summer popcorn movie. It is gratifying to still see Stallone running, grunting and fighting after doing this for almost 30 years; the man is truly a marvel. And that scene featuring cameos by Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger, although silly at moments and shabbily acted is still a delight for the kid in me who idolized Schwarzenegger and yearns to see him back on the big screen. Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren and several others round out the cast and do a fine job for the most part; Statham being the best actor of the bunch.
All in all, I was not let down by The Expendables and I am sure we will get an inevitable sequel, a prospect Stallone himself said he is interested in making. I just hope that in the next one Stallone can convince other action icons like Steven Seagal, Kurt Russell, Van Damme, Chuck Norris and while you’re at it, Wesley Snipes to join the cast. That would be awesome.
